just before his procedure to get a new pacemaker. 7 PM Friday night.
Friday morning Gary was awaken to a shocking jolt of his pacemaker-defibrillator. He yelled at me from the bedroom, I was already awake and doing somethings on the computer...it was about 6 AM. I thought he said he had been shot. I thought to myself how could he be shot? I did not hear a gun shot, I quickly went back to the bedroom to find Gary clutching his chest and getting another jolt to his body. My first thought was to get Glenn so he could help his dad and give him a blessing. I grabbed the phone to call 911 just in case he was having a heart attack. Glenn was sound asleep so he heard me said what I heard Gary say...Dad had been shot...not shocked. He started yelling and rushed into the bedroom to find his dad hunched over with his hand on his heart still thinking he had been shot. He gave him a blessing while I called 911. The paramedics got here in timely fashion and when they get here Dad was OK. They checked him out and were about to leave...suggesting that we contact the cardiac DR. and be seen sometime that day when he got another jolt, and another and another and another...they quickly put the posts back on him to get a measure of his heart and blood pressure...dad quickly said to you better get me to the hospital. Bro. Millett quietly came into the house and was there when the ambulance drove away. I was still in my PJ's...Glenn had gotten dressed so as soon as I fixed my hair a little we headed to the emergency room. Glenn had gotten of hold of all the siblings and Angelene beat us to the hospital.
We found Gary in a room in the heart section of the emergency room. He seemed to be OK just scared not knowing what was going on. He had not had anymore shocks...thank goodness. Aunt Judy showed up next. They took his vitals and called a Metronic specialist to come and check his device. I told the paramedics that his device was on recall...he just looked at me funny..."yea, sure lady!" We were told if the lead wire should malfunction it would make a siren noise....not jolt him like it did. A emergency room Dr. came in and told us what was going to happen. They took blood and were going to do a chest X-ray and get tests done on his blood. And then call his cardiologist Dr. Sung. Before too long Rachelle was there. We could only have two people at a time at his bed side. So we took turns being in with him. It wasn't too long until the metronic specialist was there and she was hooking up the computer when the X-ray people showed up. They wanted to do a quick X-ray but she told them to wait until she could check out the pacemaker just in case a wire had fractured. Sure enough it was the wire...she explained that if they had done the X-ray first he might have gotten shocked again. She disabled the fractured wire and they did the X-ray. She did some more tests and printed out the results. She sent the results to DR. Sung. She said that Dad needed a new device...but we thought he just needed a new wire. She said that the wire would just stay in there and be capped off so it wouldn't cause anymore shocks. Aunt Judy said he would need to have wing nuts to do the job. Satya showed up next...then Amaron after a while. It was nice to be able to tell everyone that it was the device not the heart that cause the jolts. Loren was still in bed when Angelene called him. Adam was up hunting....Sean and family at their ward camp out. But the children all managed to get told. DeLona and Dayson got the word also.
First we were told that the procedure would be at 12 noon...but as that time came we were told around 4 PM would be the time and that dad would be admitted to the heart hospital soon. It was close to 1:30 Pm before they admitted Gary to the hospital. Soon after that Judy and I went to lunch. Thank you Judy for staying with me the whole day and for lunch. Angelene went to work, Glenn went home to get some more rest and get cleaned up, Rachelle when home to Queen Creek to get ready to go up to the cabin, Satya went to get ready to go up to Taylor, Amaron had to finish up working for the day. We received many calls and texts through out the day on the progress of things. Dad could not eat anything....he was waiting for surgery....Dr. Sung came in to visit with us and told us that things had been delayed because of an emergency. Finally around 6:50 PM some nurses showed up to get Gary. Before that Glenn and Aaron administered to him. Thank goodness for the priesthood. Angelene, Zach, Rachelle,& Aaron all left and Judy, Glenn and I waited for the procedure to be done. Around 8:15 the Dr. came out and said that everything went well and that Gary had a new generator....pacemaker and he could go home on the next day around 12 noon. Judy left and Glenn & I followed him back to the room. Gary was pretty groggy. He mostly slept for the first 4 hours...his blood pressure was real high and the nurse-Bonny called and got him some good pain medicine (morphine) that helped his BP come down and him to able to sleep more peacefully. Glenn went home and I stayed the night. The nurses brought me in a recliner to sleep on. Around 12:20 PM Gary woke up and was hungry. Gary got a turkey sandwich with some grapes to eat and a few apple juices and some gelatin. The night seemed long. Glenn came back in the morning so I went home to get cleaned up and bring back some clothes for Gary. Glenn called about 10 AM and said that the Dr. had been in and said that Gary could go home so I hurried and went back...only to wait until the internal medicine DR. came and gave the OK to go home....it was 12:45 PM when that happened and 2 PM when we got home.
WE are grateful for Doctors and nurses, hospitals, paramedics, ambulances. Most especially family. We love you all and thank you for your support.
